A little reminiscent of mine....

Teach The Children

Damn you farmers of war
when you broadcast your seed
stay you think for a while
the foul fruit of your deed
think of who reaps the harvest
this year and the next
and who pays the toll
for your deadly bequest

bloody ploughmen of hate
count your soldiers each day
and then count your women and children
and pray
count their arms and their legs
this year and the next
count you well
count the toll
of your deadly bequest

    eeny meeny miney mo
catch a nigger by the toe
    dont walk the fields
    dont dare to go
    teach the children
    teach them so
    eeny meeny miney mo
    O.U.T. spells out

And the flowers in the field
when the blast tears the air?
A sunflower may not lose
its proud and high head
but the sweet lowly rose
will be rendered apart
and its delicate petals
lay scattered and dead

and you in the west
your hands are not clean
who sold the worlds armies
those deadly machines
uncharted that wait
in the miserable soil
for the innocent peasant
at innocent toil

    eeny meeny miney mo
catch a nigger by the toe
    dont walk the fields
    dont dare to go

An interesting review of an interesting film. I didn't catch the two son's meeting on the steps of the school until I rewound the last sequence. The very fact that this meeting is almost 'hidden' gives it a dramatic tension, although the meeting gives us no drama or clue as to the outcome. Were the tapes actually posted by Pierrot who, as an impressionable teenager has been told of the injustice perpetrated by his Father ? Maybe a long shot, but without conclusion the narrative is open to opinion. I sense the most important theme in this film is the treatment of North Africans in France, and that even in apparent 'educated' households the perpetuation of the injustices of the French state against them has never been condemned.

Comment on Birth - Kidman, ice-maiden - all ice, no maiden by Zettel Film Reviewer

Mickey - thanks for the comment

It's what we bring to art that matters most and disagreements only need to be honest to be immensely valuable. It is clear that Nicole Kidman's screen presence, and I've never doubted her technical ability, touches you very directly in the way that other actors do me. That's a matter of taste and it's a good thing we don't all see things the sane way.

Afraid I can't agree with you about the screenplay and the rest of Birth but if you buy into the acting maybe it has a quality lost if you don't.

Thanks again for the comment - love of movies generally is much more important than disagreement about particular films.

regards

Sir or madam, I am aghast. Birth was deeply moving and challenging for the viewer (in a good way), and was a cinematic triumph.
The long facial close-up of Kidman is one of the most profoundly mesmerising film sequences I have ever seen, and her acting in that clip alone is of the very, very highest order.
The movie is a visual delight and the casting, in my humble opinion, is absolutely spot on. Kidman is quite brilliant and as a direct result, I'm a huge fan of hers now. And as for Jonny Glazer, the man's a bl**dy genius.

That's OK ... I just can't help myself. I'm an impassioned proofreader, and I loves me my Dylan! This film, and the man himself, deserve all the kudos they get. Thanks for a great article.
